On May 27, 2018, I stood on my front porch and watched as Main Street filled with water and quickly turned into a raging river. As tears poured down my face in sadness and in fear, I couldn't believe it was happening a 2nd time in less than 2 years. After getting over the initial shock of what had just happened, and after weeks of cleaning mud and mold out of my house, replacing furniture, cars, etc., I found myself standing on that very porch, crying again thinking about how I had lost so many of my neighbors to displacement and being fearful that no one would ever want to come to Ellicott City again, the town that has been the only place I've ever felt like home. Ironically, the morning of the flood I did a photoshoot in town and I was thankful I had those photos, but sad thinking that may have been the last time I shot on Main Street. And then came Kayla and Eric. We met about 2 months after the 2018 flood and I was over the moon excited when they shared their vision to marry at Patapsco Female Institute and then celebrate at Main Street Ballroom. I remember asking them "you know your wedding date will be the anniversary weekend of the flood?" and they shrugged and said they would take their chance. And I am so happy they did! They could not have asked for a more gorgeous day in Ellicott City, or for better family and friends to celebrate with. The sheer amount of love and laughter that filled this day was exactly what these two deserve, and exactly what I needed to feel like Ellicott City will rise once again. Thank you both for choosing our small town to begin this next journey in your life. May you take the spirit of EC with you everywhere you go, and when things get tough, use our journey as inspiration for yours. xoxo
